Vic: Waverley surface loose and sandy, says O Sullivan

A former Carlton footballer has told a jury how players and trainers had stamped down
parts of an oval before he injured his knee in 1993.

One-time Blues ruck rover and half forward LUKE "RHINO" O'SULLIVAN has launched damages
action against the AFL and his old club over the injury sustained on a rough playing surface
in a Fosters Cup game at Waverley Park.

He claims to have lost $807,600 in football earnings between 1993 and 1999.

O'SULLIVAN told the Victorian County Court of the nightmare year he had after the injury
and of associated injuries since.

O'SULLIVAN retired after playing 15 senior games in 1997 and is claiming damages for
loss of earnings and pain, and loss of enjoyment of life as a result of the injury.

Under cross-examination by JOHN JORDAN for the AFL, O'SULLIVAN agreed he could not
be sure the ground had anything to do with his knee injury in one of the incidents viewed
on video.

The case before Judge ANTHONY SMITH is continuing.

FED: Howard to open new Anzac site at Galliipoli

CANBERRA, April 10 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard will pay tribute to Australia's
World War I diggers at the Anzac Day dawn service in Gallipoli later this month.

Mr Howard and New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark will be at the 85th anniversary
service on April 25, which will mark the opening of a new memorial site at Anzac Cove.

Officials expect more than 10,000 people at the new site, which was built to counter
overcrowding at the traditional dawn service at the Ari Burnu war cemetery.

More than 11,000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers were killed in the Gallipoli campaign
in 1915.

Mr Howard's overseas trip will also take in France and Israel, but there will be a
strong focus on Australia's war heritage.

In France, Mr Howard will make a pilgrimage to the WWI battlefields of the Somme in
France, where his father and grandfather both fought.

Mr Howard will also use the trip for a series of bilateral meetings, with Turkish Prime
Minister Bulen Ecevit and President Suleyman Demirel, and with French Prime Minister Lionel
Jospin and President Jacques Chirac.

"Building on our historical links with Turkey, I hope to encourage greater substance
to bilateral relations and further growth in trade and investment," Mr Howard said in
a statement.

In Israel, Mr Howard will attend a Holocaust Day memorial and will receive an honorary
doctorate from the Bar-Ilan University.

He will hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, as well as Palestinian leader
Yasser Arafat in Gaza.

"Australia strongly supports a lasting and genuine peace in the Middle East and my
discussions with Prime Minister Barak and Chairman Arafat will encourage the efforts of
all parties toward this objective," he said.

NSW: Investors lose money in three out of four rural investments

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has warned that investors lose their
money in three out of every four rural investment schemes.

ASIC Regional Commissioner GREG TANZER says it isn't usually the product that's the problem
-- it's the fees that line the pockets of the promoter and manager, and unrealistic claims of
high profits.

Every year between April and June new rural investment schemes are offered to investors,
with the promise of high returns and tax concessions.

Mr TANZER says last year more than 700 people rushed the ASIC infoline trying to invest in
April Fool's Day promotions of fake blue bottle farms and goat-sheep cross breeding programs.

Last year more than 11,000 people in 30 projects had their tax deductions disallowed.

SYDNEY, Dec 14 AAP - New South Wales Opposition Leader Kerry Chikarovski will announce
changes to her shadow cabinet this afternoon.

Mrs Chikarovski has promised only minimal changes to the Coalition frontbench following her
coup against Peter Collins last week.

Two backbench MPs are expected to be promoted, one of them almost certainly Mrs
Chikarovskis long-time ally Barry OFarrell.

Mr Collins is one MP who will not be part of the Chikarovski team.

She told him last week that he needed "time out" after being dumped and she would not
consider allowing him onto the front bench until after the March state election.

CANBERRA, Feb 23 AAP - Federal coalition MPs have rounded on independent Rob Oakeshott
telling him to toughen up and accept criticism of his policy positions.

Mr Oakeshott reportedly abandoned his weekly meeting with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott,
citing "personal attacks" from the coalition.

The final straw was a comment from opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey that a
vote for an independent was a vote for Labor.

Mr Hockey relayed that message on behalf of veteran broadcaster Alan Jones during a
function in his electorate on Friday …
